Chris Ramsden BA(Hons), MSc, Cert. Ed. MIPEM, CSci,
DipCFHP, DipBMec, MPSPract, FCIEHF, FIMMM, PPCSD
An experienced Industrial Designer, Ergonomist, Biomedical Engineer, Consultant Clinical Scientist and
Registered Foot Health Practitioner. Chris uses his over 35 years of international experience as a conduit to bring people and organisations together, from often very disparate disciplines and
starting points, to work successfully together in developing innovative products and solutions and in treating patients' foot health and biomechanical needs.
This broad practical experience ranges from clinical practice, consumer product design, inclusive design,
medical device, ergonomics and human factors systems, to the design and manufacture of several biomedical flight hardware packages that flew on the NASA Space Shuttle and worked with ESA European and
Russian Space programmes.
He is a Fellow and Past President of the Chartered Society of Designers, the world’s largest chartered
professional body for design; Former Senior Vice President of the European Institute for Design & Disability (EIDD – Design for All Europe) and Board member of Institute of Materials, Minerals
& Mining’s Surface Engineering Division. Chris is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine; Fellow of the Institute of Ergonomics & Human Factors and is an active member of research and
grant assessment panels, learned societies and professional bodies embracing science, technology, healthcare and the arts. Chris currently works in Design Consultancy, Clinical Practice and as
Research Director at Surgical Armoury Ltd working closely with Mr Mark Herron, Consultant Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Surgeon and Podiatrists. In addition to these activities Chris is still actively
involved with the CSD, as Honarary Treasurer and member of the Course Evaluation Team.
Working in senior positions within Industry, Academia, Healthcare, the Third Sector and in Local Government
agencies has given Chris a unique in-depth knowledge across a broad spectrum of ‘real life’ problem solving practice and process models that he is able to call upon when dealing with inter and
multidisciplinary problems. Whilst working at Advantage West Midlands, the Regional Development Agency for the West Midlands, Chris was instrumental in successfully establishing the Medical
Technologies Cluster, growing it to over £10m of contracted activity over a 3 year period. Chris represented the Midlands internationally in Lifesciences.
In 2011 Chris was presented with a special award for services to the Life Sciences Industry by
MedilinkWM.
Above all, Chris is a passionate believer in true inter and intra-disciplinary partnership working and the role
of disruptive innovation in breaking down communication barriers, to bring people and organisations closer together for the benefit of all.
